Washington State Council on Behavioral Health Presentation: RCCS and Trauma-Informed Care
/At the Washington State Council on Behavioral Health Conference in June 2021, Telecare leaders presented our learnings and best practices on creating a recovery-centered program environment that is trauma-informed.
Telecare’s approach to this work is shaped by 20+ years of experience in developing our own Recovery-Centered Clinical System (RCCS), implementing the RCCS in 130+ programs, and training thousands of Telecare staff and external providers on our approach. The RCCS focuses on two distinct but complementary areas of recovery at the program level: the culture and the conversations.
Left to Right: Jim Sechrist, LMFT, Vice President of Operations; David Heffron, Vice President of Operations
About the Workshop:
The workshop, titled Making Trauma-Informed Care Come Alive: Designing & Creating a Program Culture, introduced participants to the RCCS and the Five Awarenesses that are at its core (power, judgment, motivation, respect, and uniqueness).
David Heffron, Vice President of Operations, and Jim Sechrist, LMFT, Vice President of Operations, are co-chairs of Telecare RCCS Steering Committee and have overseen its development and evolution over the years. In this workshop, David and Jim explain how the Five Awarenesses work together to become a primary intervention.
The workshop covered concepts and skills that support recovery-oriented services in behavioral health care, including the invisible burden of past traumas, how to listen with curiosity, how agency rules and routines can be shifted to decrease control, the power of judgment in documentation, and creating a place of belonging.

Learn more about the RCCS:
Telecare introduced the Recovery-Centered Clinical System (RCCS) into our services more than 20 years ago. This richly personal, holistic, and comprehensive approach to recovery was developed internally with extensive involvement from Telecare’s clinical and operational staff at all levels, including direct input and collaboration with our clients and peer employees.
